Landlords rarely doubt that you say you pay on time — they doubt that they can check it. This guide shows how to turn your bank data into proof a landlord can verify in seconds, from setup to your first shared profile. Setup takes about five minutes and Maja is free for renters.
A statement PDF or a landlord reference is easy to edit, and the person reading it knows that. It also exposes far more than a leasing decision needs: your balance, your salary, your shopping. Maja instead reads transaction data directly from your bank through PSD2 open banking, identifies the recurring rent payment, and shows a summary of that one payment stream. The data cannot be edited by you, by the landlord, or by Maja.
An account at any of the 2,000+ European banks supporting PSD2, a tenancy where rent leaves that account by transfer or direct debit, and five minutes. You do not need a credit score, a national ID number, a rental reference, a payment card or documents from a previous landlord.
Sign up with email, Google or Apple and choose the renter role. With Google or Apple, Maja asks for your name separately so landlords see "Emma K." rather than an email address.
Search for your bank and authorise inside your bank's own login flow. Credentials are entered at your bank and never reach Maja, and access is read-only: Maja can read transactions and can never move money or change your details. Choose the account rent actually leaves from — a savings account contains nothing useful — and avoid the in-app browsers of Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn or TikTok, which block the redirects strong authentication needs.
Maja scans 12 to 24 months of history, filters out transfers between your own accounts and card purchases, and proposes the recurring payment that looks like rent. Nothing is saved until you confirm it once. From then on Maja knows your rent amount, your payment day and the payee, and groups payments by month so a double payment or a correction does not distort the record.
Your dashboard shows verified months, the on-time share and a reliability label: Excellent Renter, Reliable Renter, Establishing History or Some Late Payments. A payment counts as late only when it arrives more than five days after your normal due day, so weekends, bank holidays and slow interbank transfers never penalise you. Genuine late months are shown honestly with the number of days.
Enter the landlord's email and Maja sends a secure link. They need no account and no login. The free view always covers your three most recent months; if they want a longer track record they can unlock 6, 12 or 24 months at their own cost. Links expire after 30 days and you can send a new one per application.
PSD2 requires bank consents to be renewed roughly every 90 days. Maja emails you before yours expires; renewing takes a few clicks and your existing history stays intact. Renewing between apartments is worth it — history keeps accumulating so you arrive at viewing season with a longer record.
Rent paid in cash, paid from someone else's account, bundled with utilities in a single transfer, or an amount that changes every month can all prevent detection. Connect the account the money actually leaves from, or read the bank connection troubleshooting guide.
Does Maja cost anything for renters? No — renters use Maja free of charge, with no payment card at any point. Can Maja move money? No, access is read-only. How much history can I show? Up to 24 months, limited by what your bank exposes over PSD2. What if I move country? Connect your new bank to the same profile; Maja works across the EU/EEA and the UK. Can I delete my data? Yes, at any time from Settings.
